What IS LOW-VISION
Low vision is vision loss that cannot be corrected with spectacles,
contact lenses or surgery
It is not blindness, as limited sight remains. Low vision can include blind spots, loss of central or peripheral vision, poor night vision and blurred vision. Common causes are age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetes, detached retinas, trauma and genetic eye conditions.
WHAT WE OFFER
We offer a functional assessment carried out by Occupational Therapists to establish the impact of low vision on the whole person, and look for possible solutions
We see clients of all ages at our low vision service
Coping with low vision is more than just using a magnifier
Information about various eye conditions
Information about lighting and glare protection
UV glare protection glasses
Low vision assistive devices
Magnifiers handheld and electronic
Low vision computer software/solutions
Introduction to coping with skills of daily living
Basic mobility training
Ongoing assistance in our network of monthly support groups
Information about /referral to other low vision service providers in the community

FUNDING
The Low Vision Service is funded by the Helen Keller Society and the generosity of donations from the public
Although we do not charge for our services, clients are encouraged to make a donation to the service if they are able
When funds are available we try and assist disadvantaged clients in the acquisition of necessary low vision aids and magnifiers
