How your donation benefits the Society

Sponsorship of individuals

The Society sponsors some of its residents who cannot meet the full charges for board & lodging, and nursing care in the Home or Care Centre, after 2 or 3 years in residence. The amount of such sponsorship depends on the income of the resident, including the amount of contributions made by their family members. A donation of between R10 000 – R15 000 per month will sponsor a resident whose sole income is a State Pension.

Sponsorship of Community Services

The aim of our Low Vision clinics at Groote Schuur, Tygerberg and Eersterivier Hospitals, and the Athlone School for the Blind, is to assist the blind and visually impaired members living in the community who have no medical assistance, regardless of their age. We aim to set up a fund of up to R1m, the income from which will be used to provide aids and assistive devices to those who cannot afford to pay for them.

Current sponsorship

We provide for sponsorship in our annual budget of which a certain sum is allocated to individual sponsorships, as well as our Low Vision Community Services programme.

How to donate to the Society

The Society seeks private donations, corporate gifts and development grants to expand our sponsorship programme. There are many ways to give to the Society:

Donations via cheque or EFT

The Society accepts personal, private, corporate and institutional donations in any denomination. Donors may make gifts in memory of, or in honour of a family member, friend or colleague. Any gift may be designated for sponsorship of individuals, the Society’s Low Vision Community Services, or general operating support. (Our banking details are available upon request.)

Gifts of shares or stock

Giving shares or stock that have appreciated in value is a popular way to provide support for the Foundation, and provides potential tax savings for the donor.

Planned or deferred gifts

You can provide for the future of the Society through a variety of Estate planning options including bequests, charitable gift annuities and charitable trusts. Each of these options include particular benefits to your Estate and to the Society. You can remember the Society in your Will through a gift of a specific amount of money, a specific item of property, or a specified percentage of the residue of your Estate.

We recommend that your bequest be for unrestricted purposes, or be directed generally to sponsor one of the Society’s activities.

Please consult your attorney and/or financial advisor for specific information in regard to Estate duty deductions associated with gifts made through a bequest.

Gift in Kind

The Society appreciates all donations in support of its mission, and considers each gift in kind on an individual basis to evaluate its best use.
